Sledging the UK

2010: The Year of the Great British Sledge-pull

The journey that Captain Scott and his team undertook to the South Pole and back in 1911-1912 was attempting to travel 1766 statute miles (or 1532 geographical miles) in around 125 days, an average of 14-15 miles per day.

Yet how many of us can really relate to this challenge?

This is roughly equivalent to travelling from Lands End to John O'Groats by road (874 miles) ... and back again! 1748 miles!

To mark the Scott Centenary, the ISCE2012 team will therefore be rising to this challenge, bringing home some of the stark reality of Captain Scott's challenge, with a sledge from Lands End to John O'Groats and back again.

The sledge will be hauled in relays by volunteer youth-group teams.
