James Smith
I’m 30 and work for the British Youth Council in London, supporting a group of young volunteers. I love the outdoors and adventure and believe Captain Scott can and should be an inspiration to everyone, no matter what their goals are. My biggest expedition to date was a crossing of the Greenland ice cap in 2004 – an incredibl
e experience, which inspired me later to write a thesis on using expeditions to bring people in conflict together and to help them to find understanding an
d mutual respect. Being involved in the ISCE project is a dream come true.
April 2011: I came to HMS Raleigh expecting to work in a team but found myself in a team that worked. And it worked well. Being with others with a passion for adventure and the drive to tell Captain Scott’s story brought sparkle to my eye. To quote a team member, “I just knew I was in the right place”. That place; the selection course for the International Scott Centenary Expedition, was supported by the Royal Navy who provided three challenging and hugely rewarding days. Going to Antarctica is a dream but I’m simply grateful to be part of an incredible project.
