Jason Nitz, Expedition Founder
On the 21st June, Antony Jinman (expedition leader) visited Brixham Primary School in Devon to inspire and educate about the Polar Regions and Captain Scott. Starting with his North Pole expedition of 2010, the children were amazed at the trials that still face the modern day explorer. A world far away from Devon, and a landscape that some could never have imagined! Antony then went on to discuss Captain Scott, who was of course, very local to this village school.
With the recent release of the DVD of “The Great White Silence” - a film by Herbert Ponting, originally seen in 1925, and recently restored by the British Film Institute - it is now possible to take children back in time and show them what life was like for the Terra Nova expedition. Each scene is individually selectable, and so the school could switch from Penguins to Whales and from Ships to Skis, giving them a well-rounded experience of life at the South Pole in the era of their great-grandparents. The film also includes original text that describes each screen, and the event saw children as young as 5 following the progress of the expedition and becoming enthralled at what they saw.
This kind of learning is exactly what Education Through Expeditions (ETE, the company running the outreach for the ISCE) is all about. Inspiring children through the experience of worldwide environments, and providing positive role models, such as Captain Scott and his team, on which the future generation can include in their own aspirations for life.
