It is worth recalling the extraordinary bravery of those who embarked on such feats of endurance with their rudimentary equipment and no realistic hope of rescue if something went wrong.

The centenary of the mid-winter dinner held by Captain Scott and his party at Cape Evans on 22 June 1911 was celebrated with a a large party of distinguished guests aboard HMS Victory on 23 June. As Scott noted in his diary at the time:
"Thursday, June 22_.--MIDWINTER. The sun reached its maximum depression at about 2.30 P.M. on the 22nd, Greenwich Mean Time: this is 2.30 A.M. on the 23rd according to the local time of the 180th meridian which we are keeping. Dinner to-night is therefore the meal which is nearest the sun's critical change of course, and has been observed with all the festivity customary at Xmas at home"
We also, therefore, observed the occasion as near as possible to the centenary of mid-winter 1911. Members of Her Majesty's Armed Forces, Government Ministers and MPs, Senior Journalists, Sponsors, Descendants of Captain Scott's Expeditions, contemporary Antarctic Scientists and Explorers and other VIPs helped to celebrate this historic milestone.
The dinner was organised by our sister expedition under the 'Spirit of Scott' banner, the British Services Antarctic Expedition, with their Science Patron, Surgeon Rear Admiral Lionel Jarvis acting as host with the ISCE team and the Polar Families welcomed as honoured guests.
The dinner attracted considerable media attention and featured in the broadcasts or websites of BBC, ITV and the Telegraph.
