The ISCE2012-Telegraph Competition shortlist candidates went on a 48 hour hiking challenge across Dartmoor last weekend. The candidates hiked across 65 km of bogs, fields, forested lanes, tors and streams, carrying 18 kg of provisions on their backs, including kit generously loaned by the Royal Navy.
In anticipation of future sledging, candidates observed a closely-timed routine, which saw them walking 1½ hour legs, with 10 minute rest breaks in between. Candidates were taught how to keep energy and hydration levels up with timely, continual snacking and drinking. Nights were spent under hastily strung-up ponchos and in bivi bags. The weather was clement throughout.
Expedition Leader Antony Jinman said that the aim of the training and selection exercise was to gauge candidates’ endurance and motivation, rather than to fine-tune survival skills. He said, ‘I am pleased with what I’m seen from all of them. They dug deep when it mattered.’
See the Dartmoor Training page on this website for more details and pictures of the weekend.
The next selection event is scheduled for the first weekend in August.
