Community Engagement Project News

Over 60 schools and youth clubs have now been visited by Antony Jinman in and around the area of Plymouth, the birth place of both Antony and Captain Scott. Plans are also unveiled for a National Teachers Conference in June 2011 and road show workshops “Polar Fun Days” to tour the nation. The aim of the workshops are to make Polar Science in the classroom fun, and to remember the scientific importance of the Terra Nova Expedition.

Daily Telegraph Launches Competition


The ISCE 2012 in conjunction with The Telegraph is offering a reader the chance to win a place on the tribute journey. The winner of our competition will join the sledging team from McMurdo Sound to the last campsite of Captain Scott’s Polar Party, where a memorial service will be held, and then return to McMurdo Sound.

Applicants should be aged between 18-30, and write an article of 500-1,000 words entitled: “Why Captain Scott is important to me”.


The ISCE has also secured a media deal with South West Media Group which means regular feature articles hence additional exposure for the expedition and sponsors.

Appointment of Felicity Aston as Deputy Expedition Leader of sledging team

On 29th December 2009, Felicity stood at the Geographic South Pole having successfully led the largest and most international women’s team ever to make the 900km ski journey. Her 8-woman team involved members from the Commonwealth countries of Cyprus, Ghana, India, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, New Zealand, Jamaica and the UK.

“The RN intends to maximise the opportunity to reinvigorate The RN’s and Plymouth ’s connections with Captain Scott. The RN is looking to support (and possibly join) this project to inspire the youth of today with the determination and dedication in the face of adversity that was demonstrated by Captain SCOTT and his team.”

Appointment of Antony Jinman as Expedition Leader to head a Plymouth sledging team

Antony Jinman, 29 is a British Explorer from Plymouth who has taken part in no less than 10 expeditions to the Arctic, including projects to Baffin Island, Greenland and the Geographic North Pole. The Geographic North Pole expedition saw Antony and his two team mates ski and snow shoe (and sometimes swim) over 500 miles from Cape Discovery to the Geographic North Pole in just 51 days, collecting valuable scientific data for the University of Plymouth.
